EUTC, in response to the concerns of it's members and other like minded parties within the utility sector has, within the last 18 months engaged with the Spectrum Policy Group at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Information Society in an attempt to understand the position for utility companies to access additional radio spectrum. Companies responsible for the transformation of existing energy grids into the future smartgrids believe wireless services will play a major role in meeting the increased requirements for communications services. EUTC attended the Spectrum Summit in March 2010 and emphasised the requirements of the energy sector to all those present.
This workshop will discuss and debate the issues and benefits of utility companies having access to unified spectrum in support of smartgrids. The event will be a mix of presentations and a round table discussion involving representatives from the European Commission, utility companies (ESB, Alliander and ESKOM have confirmed their attendance), vendors (such as Silver Spring Networks and Tait) and EUTC. Some companies are already using spectrum in the evolution towards the smartgrid, others are planning national smartgrid solutions. EUTC will explain the research they have conducted to define the relationship between smartgrid data requirements and spectrum bandwidth.
There is specific interest in utility companies gaining access to additional sub 1GHz spectrum and this workshop will seek to understand any barriers that may exist, what options are available, the potential benefits and what is seen as the way forward.
This short workshop will appeal to all those with an interest in wireless systems and services to support the creation of energy efficient networks.
