Smartmetering Exhibit at European Parliament
1 April 2008 On 1 April 2008 Mr. Salvador Garriga, Member of the European Parliament, invited the European Utilities Telecom Council (EUTC) to stage an exhibition at the European Parliament in Brussels to help take Smart Metering from concept to reality for members of the European Parliament. The event met great success with many Parliamentarians and EU stakeholders present to exchange with EUTC board members, and listen to opening notes from Magdena Kuneva, European Commissioner for Consumers, and Alejo Vidal Quadras, Vice-President of the European Parliament. The exhibition’s sponsors, Alcatel and Landis and Gyr, leading Smart Metering solutions providers in Europe, showed actual demonstrations of each company’s Smart Metering application. Iberdrola, a Spanish energy company and EUTC member, presented on the importance of the use of open standards in the provision of telecommunication services and their interface to the energy and water meters in order to successfully drive implementation of large scale multi-meter solutions. These companies’ representatives, Christine Diamente, European Affairs Director, Alcatel Lucent, Stefan Weber, Executive Vice President Europe, Landis and Gyr, and Javier Vallalba, CEO of Iberdrola Networks, addressed the audience on the crucial role Smart Metering will play in enabling the vision of Smartgrids, the upgrading the overall electrical grid – a major goal of the European Union.
