Miguel Angel Sánchez Fornié Addresses Information and Communication Technologies for Energy Efficiency Meeting
On January 31, 2008, Miguel Angel Sánchez Fornié, as EUTC Chairman, will speak during the opening general session of the Information and Communication Technologies for Energy Efficiency. More information on the
conference is available here .
EUTC Co-Hosts Smartmetering Exhibition at European Parliament
On 1 April 2008, EUTC will co-host an exhibition at European Parliament with Mr. Salvador Garriga Polledo, Member of the European Parliament, focused on Smartmetering.
The objective of this exhibition is to demonstrate in a simple way how Smartmetering can be implemented on a scale that will serve all households within a
country or region in the European Union. The exhibition also will present the technology behind this solution through some didactic displays and the presentation of typical equipment to be used in Smartmetering.
Member representatives from EUTC will be there to answer questions and present their ideas and solutions. For more information, click here .
Smart Metering with a Focus on Electricity Regulation Paper
Back in October, the European Regulators' Group for Electric and Gas released a new paper entitled, Smart Metering with a Focus on
Electricity Regulation. This paper is central to supporting EUTC's ideas on the important of Smart metering for utilities in Europe. Most importantly, this paper states that
Smart Metering provides not only cost savings to the utility company, but to the end consumers that will be able to influence their consumption. Overall, Smart Metering
is important to improving the electric grid and to the future "smart grid" that Europe is investing in. To read the entire paper, click here .
Innovation and Technological Development In Energy Information
The Energy Section for the European Commission has published several items of note on their Web page here .
Most of these items are of general note because they deal with the role technology and ultimately telecom will play in the future as the EC develops a robust energy plan. Current
objectives, specifically to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, to ensure 20% of renewable energy sources in the EU energy mix and to reduce EU primary energy use by 20% by
2020 will result in telecom and IT professionals at European energy companies implementing applications which will help support these objectives.
European Telecom Market Authority Proposed
In November, European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, announced his proposal for a European Telecom Market Authority as part of the Telecoms Reform Package; which would mark
the sole telecom regulator for Europe. The function of this regulator would be to apply telecom regulation consistently and independently as a single market. Viviane Reding, EU telecoms
commissioner, supports this position and feels that European consumers would benefit under the single regulatory model for telecoms. The Telecom Reform Package was just presented to the
European Parliament and final approval is still pending. The EC is expending this approval in 2009.
Advanced Metering Technology Expanding in US
In October, American Electric Power (AEP) and GE Energy announced an agreement to focus on projects together that would enable customers to increase efficiency and reduce energy costs.
Through this agreement, GE Energy is providing technology that AEP will begin deploying. Initially, this means rolling out advance metering to 200,000 of AEP’s customers by the end of 2008. Customers in the deployment area will have more control over their electric uses enabling them to better adjust their consumption and charges.
ANNEX 4 – Long Term dimension in the 3rd Internal Energy Market package
Several European Commission Directives will play a major role in promoting energy efficiency and adequacy – primarily through extra support in areas that will promote research and development. You can
read the document here .
Ofcom Strategic Review of Telecommunications Statement
Back in 2005, Ofcom published their strategic review of telecommunications. We encourage you to take another look at this document since it still contains a lot of good information – particularly
in regards to competition. Review the document here .
ACT Call 3 Open Until 8 April 2008
Earlier this month, the Information and Communication Technologies theme of the Cooperation Programme announced a call for proposals focused on the two strategic challenges for ICT. This call, in
particular, is asking for proposals on Challenge 2 which deals with cognitive systems, interaction and robotics; as well as Challenge 4 which deals with digital libraries and content. The budget
for these proposals is of €265m. For more information, click here .
